Edward Manet is one of the founders
of impressionism in the 19th century. He was born in 1832 in Paris, France. Although
he never take apart in impressionist exhibition, his innovative of art creation
deeply influenced the rising painters such as Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and other
painters who is on the way to modern art road. Affected by the style of
Japanese yamato-e and Spanish style, Manet trying to use bright color, abandon
traditional painting the use of halftone, break the constraints of only three-dimensional
space in traditional drawing, and take drawing to a whole new level of graphic
creation and design.
Manet was born in a wealthy lawyer
family. Youth, he was a seaman but went
to study in Thomas Couture’s studio. Manet was not a fan of sociology
and politics; all of his thoughts were concentrated on art. He didn’t follow
the teacher blindly, instead, he devoted all his experience and skills and used
his own way to interpret and express his artworks. Not only that, reality for
him was just a fundamental base of his creation and he can’t tolerate this kind
of rigidity and false academic style of drawing, he said: “when I went into the
studio, always feel as if I went into a grave.”
During this time, he often travels to the Louvre to inspect and learn
from all previous dynasties masterpieces. He also traveled a lot to Germany,
Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, which helped him to build up an independent
insights view of art that he would never have in the studio.
As for Claude Monet, his name always closely linked to the history of
the impressionism. For the new formation of the artistic environment, Monet contributed
more than anyone else. It is beyond doubt that Manet was the founder of
impressionism, but the one who really made it carry forward was Monet, because
his drawing of light and shadow in the change of scenery has reach to the
sublime.
At
the beginning, even the French in Paris can’t really distinguish if Mant and
Monet are exactly the same person or two different. The impact Monet to impressionism
was enormous and he eventually became the most famous impressionist painter,
mostly because he popularized impressionism. However, at the beginning Monet was
under the influence of Manet’s painting but as for the impressionist movement,
Manet has always been an outsider since he never participated in any of the
impressionist joint exhibition. Although at first glance, Manet's works belong
to classical Realism, Manet is the first man who introduced to light and color into
the impressionism of figure painting, thus created the impressionist style.
Claude Monet is always staying on to the impressionist joint exhibition of the
painter, played a real role in the development of the impressionist.
